A Preliminary Description of the Sublittoral Habitats and Associated Biota within the Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ )
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. This dataset consists of the survey results from sublittoral work carried out between 1973 and 1975. This work was the first baseline sublittoral dive survey of the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve and there is only one copy of the report currently available to NRW. As a result the digitisation and archiving of this report in a format utilisable to ongoing monitoring work and decision makers was deemed essential. The survey work focussed on the sublittoral environment around Skomer Island Marine Nature Reserve. The locations of the stations were fixed at regular distances throughout the then proposed area of the reserve, at regular depth intervals; forming a series of discontinuously sampled transects of the seabed cliff or slope. This formation of sample stations was chosen to ensure information could be obtained on substrate types and topography; water movement (exposure); and macro-flora and fauna.

Data was extracted from the Hunnam (1976) historical report and entered into Marine Recorder. The survey utilised diving survey (similar to Marine Nature Conservation Review phase 2 dive survey). The original report described 9 habitats and associated species, and assigned these to 100 stations. Stations were roughly digitised from hand drawn maps. Only one or two habitats were assigned per station in the original report although it is suspected from descriptions that more habitats may have been present at some stations than have been digitised, although this could not be confirmed. Where it was uncertain from generic habitat descriptions whether species were present at a specific station, species were marked as 'Uncertain' in Marine Recorder. Note that abundance data was converted to the SACFOR scale wherever possible, but that this is a rough conversion. The original survey was only recorded in paper format but has since been digitised and entered into Marine Recorder.
