Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Lesser Horseshoe Bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) and feeding habitat within Coedydd Derw a Safleoedd Ystlumod Meirion / Merionnydd Oak Woods Bat Sites SAC (2006)
Coedydd Derw a Safloedd Ystlumod Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is a large composite site of international importance for lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) containing more than 15 known maternity roosts and hibernacula. Although lesser horseshoe bat annual count data are collected from roosts within the SAC by the Gwynedd Bat Group and other volunteers, additional information is required regarding the condition of foraging habitat and flight lines surrounding the roosts. For the purposes of this contract, an area covering a radius of two kilometres around each of the ten target roosts was selected for further study. The purpose of this data capture was to establish the condition of the lesser horseshoe bat within the Meirionydd Oakwoods and Bat Sites Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

A total of 32 sites on potential flight lines, linked to eight target maternity roosts were monitored for bat activity throughout the summer months to establish the accessibility of potential woodland foraging areas. Feeding habitat, flight line condition and bat activity were parameters investigated. Using digital Phase 1 habitat survey data, ten of the survey areas were visited to establish the accuracy of the original data, some of which is over ten years old. Any changes in habitat classes 1-3 were noted and the necessary alterations made to the final maps depicting these potential foraging areas. Targets were then set for the area of quality foraging habitat and its connectivity to the target roost to establish the condition of the lesser horseshoe bat population. Data was used within the project that are collected from roosts within the SAC annually on bat counts by the Gwynedd Bat Group and other volunteers.
