Predicting the Impacts of Objective 1 Funding on Selected Aquatic Natura 2000 Sites in Wales
The aim of this project was to provide Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) with a clear understanding of where developments funded by the Structural Funds under Objective 1, may potentially impact sites along the Welsh coastline with aquatic Natura 2000 designations under the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). The project has involved a number of steps including; the identification of objective one structural funding projects likely to impact on the Natura 2000 sites in Wales; the identification of Welsh aquatic maturity thousand sites, and the identification of potential impacts and sensitivities based on the available information contained within Regional Action Plans (RAPS) and Local Action Plans (LAPS) and the list of priorities, measures and projects in each plan. The Objective 1 funded projects have been analysed and grouped into the following categories; fisheries, industrial developments, infrastructure developments, tourism initiatives, farming initiatives, forestry, biodiversity and conservation initiatives, and regional development. As part of this project an interactive GIS tool has been developed which identifies the Welsh aquatic maturity thousand sites within the Objective 1 funded areas and the nature conservation features for which the sites are designated. The GIS tool can be manipulated to indicate the generic impacts resulting from the likely types of Objective 1 funded projects to the features of interest at the site. This study develops a GIS tool that aims to identify where developments funded under the Structural Funds from Objective 1 may impact Welsh coastlines that occur within Natura 2000 sites. Although the data was based on the best information available at the time of capture, the base maps (Special Area of Conservation (SAC) features and boundaries) are now considered out-of-date. Newer sources of data are currently available.

GIS layers produced that identify SAC features within sites have been continually updated at CCW and are available as SAC feature Maps. These maps replace those described here. Baseline GIS layers were produced and supplied by CCW, along with citation descriptions. It was recognized that not all Natura 2000 feature maps were available at the time of the project. A summary interactions matrix was developed. This was then used as a tool to identify potential impacts for each Natura 2000 site.
