HABMAP Acoustic Multibeam Echosounder Survey of Selected Areas of the Southern Irish Sea (Summer 2005)
The HABMAP project was set up in response to the need for better spatial awareness of habitat distributions in the Southern Irish Sea. It was a partnership project between partners in Wales and Ireland, and part funded by INTERREG IIIa European regional development fund. Data collection included acoustic data, sediment data and seabed imagery. These data were used to classify the seabed and feed into a predictive modelling process to predict benthic habitat. The multibeam data was collected in five locations throughout the Southern Irish Sea by the R/V Celtic Voyager to Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) standard. They were then processed, cleaned and classified based on acoustic classes, which were then related to seabed sediment types. Bedforms were also identified using the MBES data. The Coordinate System used for the multibeam data was UTM Zone 30N. The xyz data was usually processed to a 5 m resolution. The purpose of this data capture was to obtain multibeam coverage of the five study areas identified to cover a variety of different environments with different physical properties and biological communities. This would be used to link backscatter intensity to physical properties of the seabed. Data depth corrected for tide using POLPRED software which utilises one or more of Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory's hydrodyamic models, and reduced to chart datum. CARIS HIPS / SIPS software used to create surfaces and gridded datasets by experienced surveyors.

Multibeam echosounder data acquired using Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 hull mounted on the Research Vessel (RV) Celtic Voyager. Frequency 93kHz (outer +/- 20 degrees) and 98kHz (inner +/- 50 degree swath centered at Nadir) utilising MERLIN software package. Swath ideally kept at maximum of 68 degrees to cover approximately 4.7 times water depth. Line spacing planned to give approximately 20 percent overlap.
