There are six rivers in Wales designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for lamprey, including the River Usk in South Wales. The Countryside Council for Wales and now Natural Resources Wales is responsible for monitoring the condition of lamprey species populations within SACs and to ensure the maintenance of favourable conservation status within designated sites. The main aim of this project is to undertake a condition assessment for the population attribute only for brook, river and sea lamprey designated features for the River Usk SAC for the second Habitats Directive monitoring reporting cycle (2007-2012). A total of 35 sites distributed within the Usk catchment. Only a few sites had optimal habitats and sub-optimal habitats were dominant throughout. Sampling was carried out between the 10th October and 16th November 2011. The data is used to assess the population attribute for all three lamprey species. The results of the four attributes outlined in the Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) Guidance for Freshwater Fauna give an indication of the overall condition assessment.
