Six rivers in Wales are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for these species. The River Cleddau, one of the westernmost river systems in Britain, can be broadly divided into its Eastern and Western arms. Assessments of species composition, distribution, abundance, and size-class structure are of particular importance in determining conservation status and condition. The sampling strategy for the monitoring programme for sea, river, and brook lamprey followed the protocols developed for the LIFE in UK Rivers project. The survey was undertaken to assess the population attribute of the brook lamprey, river lamprey, and sea lamprey features of the River Cleddau SAC for the second Habitats Directive reporting cycle (2007-2012). A total of 25 survey sites were sampled, comprising 12 sites in the Eastern Cleddau and 13 sites in the Western Cleddau, Pembrokeshire.
