Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Lamprey Monitoring Data for River Teifi 2012/2013
The River Teifi has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive. The three species of lamprey for which the data was collected are listed under Annex II of the Habitats Directive. Data was collect to determine the habitat condition and suitability of habitats for the lamprey, as well as make recommendations for future surveys. Data was collected to recognized standards and data presented using a GIS data. The data was collected to determine habitat conditions for lamprey in the Afon Teifi catchment. It involved collating information on age structure, distribution within the catchment, ammocoete density, spawning activity, and barriers to migration.

Lamprey was sampled using electro-fishing techniques. Inside a 1 m2 area to draw individual lamprey out of the sediment. In total 21 optimal and 27 sub-optimal habitat sites were surveyed and the following information captured: - All Catch - Habitat Data - Length Frequency - Populations Estimates Optimal - Population Estimates Sub-Optimal 30 sites were surveys sites were chosen along Afon Teifi catchment and associated sub-catchments based on their potential as spawning locations for brook, river and sea lamprey. Initial data was collected 8-9th October 2012. Initial plans were changed due to high water flows and the remaining data collected 14th Jan-19th Feb 2013.
