Swansea Bay and Carmarthen Bay Beach profiles data (Lavernock to St Anns Head Shoreline Management Plan (SMP2))
The purpose of this data capture was to provide a review of the background geological factors and physical processes which is intended to inform the assessment of policy options in the second generation Shoreline Management Plan for the area between St. Ann's Head and Lavernock Point. This dataset describes the geological and physical processes occurring at Swansea and Carmarthen Bay. Processes investigated include beach profile, beach topographic survey, LiDAR cross sections, summary characteristics, tide data and weather data. Two related reports were written within the same project Annex A and Annex B, Annex B builds on the earlier review and presents further analysis of data. Particular attention has been given to the estuaries and intervening shorelines in Swansea Bay and Carmarthen Bay. Three sections of open coast associated with the estuaries were also considered: - The Pendine to Ginst Point barrier complex (including Pendine Burrows and Laugharne Burrows) - The Tywyn Point to Pembrey Burrows barrier complex - The Hills Tor to Whiteford Point barrier complex (including Whiteford Burrows).

Morphological data from Swansea and Carmarthen Bay was collated from reports and analysed within this report. The Swansea Bay and Carmarthen Bay Shoreline Management Plan II were divided into three Coastal Behaviour Systems (CBS) (1) Bristol Channel North (Penarth to Worm's Head) (2) Carmarthen Bay (Worms Head to Giltar Point) (3) South Wales Peninsula (Giltar Point to St. David's Head) Within these CBS a number of Shoreline Behaviour Units (SBU) were identified (1) Penarth to Nash Point (2) Nash Point to Pothcawl (3) Porthcawl to Mumbles Head (4) Mumbles Head to Worms Head (5) Worms Head to Burry Holms (6) Burry Holms to Pendine (7) Pendine to Giltar Point (8) Giltar Point to Studdock Point Further analysis was performed within the Annex B report, involving analysis of additional LiDAR data. For the purpose of the study, five estuarine areas were defined within the Carmarthen Bay area and separate analyses performed on each; - The Loughor estuary (east of a line between Whiteford Point and 'The Nose' Pembrey) - The Taf Estuary (north of a line between Ginst Point and Wharley Point) - The Towy (Tywi) estuary (north of a line between Wharley Point and Tregoning Hill) - The Gwendraeth estuary (east of a line between St Ishmael and Tywyn Point) - The Three Rivers confluence area (south of a line drawn between Tywyn Point and Ginst Point).
