SAC Monitoring: Lamprey Monitoring for the River Wye (2012)
The River Wye has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The data supports a condition assessment for the population of brook, river and sea lamprey (protected under Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC) for the second Habitats Directive monitoring report cycle (2007-2012). This dataset combines the survey results from our lamprey surveys conducted by the former Environment Agency Wales (now part of Natural Resources Wales) and Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water. This data collection was required as part of the second Habitats Directive monitoring report cycle (2007-2012). 48 sites were surveyed along the following water courses; Afon Elan, Aran, Bidno, Camddwr-Irfon, Cammarch, Chwerfri, Cledan, Cnyffiad, Duhonw, Dulas Brook, Edw, Garth Dulas - Irfon, Gwenwst, Hafrena, Irfon, Llunfi, Marteg, Nant Gwesyn, Nant y Dernol, Sgithwen bridge, South Dulas - Irfon, Wye.

As detailed in the LIFE+ protocol the Environment Agency electrofishing surveys were carried out in both optimal and sub-optimal habitat. Standard electric fishing practice for operators and equipment were followed as developed by the European Standards Committee and detailed in the Environment Agency Electric Fishing Operational Instruction 99308. Data was collated from four fisheries and habitat based surveys to assess species distributions of River, Brook and Sea lamprey. Data collected included population attributes associated with habitat availability, age structure, and distribution within catchment, ammocoete density, and proximity to historic sea lamprey spawning sites. The Environment Agency Wales conducted a survey in 2010 along Afron Irfon. 19 sites were surveyed by Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water in 2012, 12 of which were within the boundary of the River Wye in Wales (the remaining 7 being located in England). 17 sites were surveys in 2012 by the former Environment Agency Wales within the Wye catchment.
