Seal pelage and Photo ID Monitoring Wales (2005-2013)
This dataset is a catalogue of seal images were collected as part of the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and Natural Resources Wales' (NRW) seal monitoring work. Specific seal pelage surveys and images provided by volunteers and members of the public were also collected through NRWs Flicker account. These images were used to monitor behaviour and populations of seals around north Wales. Photo-ID allowed these pelages to be captured and analysed, which allows a catalogue of individuals to be constructed. This was then used to estimate the population size and movements. By repeating the photo-ID on an annual basis matches can be re-made giving an indication of a seals fidelity to a particular site and associations between individuals.

Images were obtained if each animal, which consisted of where possible, left and right head profiles, chest, abdomens and flanks. A combination of fields notes and separating images were taken at the same site. At each site, counts of the number of males, females, juveniles, yearlings and pups were taken. Suitable images of the Left and Right side of the animal were processed (cropped and colour processed) and matched with the main EIRPhot database. A thumbnail of the image was stored in the database. A spreadsheet was maintained that lists which images in the main catalogue had been processed and matched within the database. Equipment: Boat for deployment and pickup, Digital SLR cameras, Handheld radio (25W radio/aerial/battery - if boat is not staying close by), GPS, charts or maps, Note book and pencil. This data and metadata entry is replaced by more recent dataset. Metadata 122202
