A Survey of Moorings and their Impact on Seagrass Beds at Porth Dinllaen (2012)
Porth Dinllaen has one of the largest and densest seagrass beds within Wales. As with the majority of the United Kingdom the seagrass bed at Porth Dinllaen is typified by one species, Zostera marina. The seagrass beds at Porth Dinllaen spans over 1 km in length and up to 650 m wide in places, throughout the inner and outer harbour areas. Previous work has found that boat moorings create distinct radial scour patterns within the Z. marina.
As part of the management of the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation(SAC), the SAC Officer has been working with the National Trust, Relevant Authorities, local fishermen, boat owners and other stakeholders to look at options to reduce the impact of the moorings on Z. marina at Porth Dinllaen. In 2012 surveys were conducted within the outer harbour using volunteer SCUBA divers.
The aims of the 2012 surveys were to record the mooring number and designs used within Porth Dinllaen outer harbour, and assess how these moorings relate to the density of Z. marina, adjacent Z. marina canopy height, and presence of wasting. The work was carried out under the Ecosystem Resilience and Diversity Fund.
