This dataset is derived only from drop-down video (11 tows) and associated still images collected by SOS from the RV Prince Madog, using a sledge with combined video cameras and stills camera. The survey area was between 8 and 25 km offshore, in the centre of Caernarfon Bay. The tow lengths ranged from 150m to 500m and seabed consisted primarily of sands and gravels with some pebbles and cobbles. The videos were analysed by Coastal Assessment, Liaison and Monitoring (CALM) to describe the seabed habitats and communities and assign them to biotopes. The main aim of the survey work by the School of Ocean Sciences was to assess the characteristics and status of offshore benthic habitats, as part of a study on the effects of scallop dredging. The aim of the subsequent data capture was to improve CCW's seabed habitat mapping for Caernarfon Bay and assign biotopes. The arrangement of the videos and cameras is described below: The middle width of the GoPro videos is about 96cm for the ones that are at an angle (80 at the bottom and >112 at the top) while the ones which face straight down are 80 cm wide. The still camera is a Canon 400D, with field of view of ca. 0.13m2 (44cm by 30cm). The middle width of the videos on the CDs are 41 cm. A manual log was kept of the position and time at the start and end of transect while the camera was on the bottom. Videos and images were analysed by a marine biological surveyor (Jen Jones) to record information on habitat character, conspicuous species and their abundance. Habitat descriptions and assignment of biotopes from the national biotope classification to each record were also recorded. Analysis included a QA process to validate and verify the recorded data. The surveys are part of a 3-year EFF funded project on habitat mapping and effects of fisheries, particularly scallop dredging. Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows: Pecten maximus and Aequipecten opercularis.
