The purpose of this data capture was to undertake monitoring of the white-clawed crayfish and its habitat on the River Wye candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) in order to report on condition as part of the assessment of Favourable Conservation Status for Natura 2000 features. A total of 16 x 500m stretches were selected randomly within each monitoring unit. Starting from the downstream end of the stretch, a 100m sampling site should be selected within each stretch which contains five suitable habitat patches measuring from 1 to 20m2. Within each habitat patch, 10 potential refuges (large cobble or boulder >15cm along longest axis) should be searched and the number of crayfish recorded. For each crayfish found, a number of attributes were recorded and a detailed record made of the physical attributes of all habitat patches sampled. The white-clawed crayfish is a proposed feature on the River Wye cSAC. Surveys in 1995 and 2002 have helped to determine its status and distribution, and identified the most important tributaries (Rogers and Holdich, 1995; Rogers and Watson, 2003), and this information has enabled the setting of provisional thresholds for condition assessment.
