Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: European Dry Heath in Cwm Doethie-Mynydd Mallaen candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) (2003)
The Cwm Doethie-Mynydd Mallaen candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) supports dry heath and sessile oak woodland, both of which are features of international importance. This dataset includes data collected during a survey and monitoring programme of the dry heath feature at Cwm Doethie-Mynydd Mallaen cSAC, undertaken in 2003 and 2004. The purpose of the contract was to assess the condition, extent and distribution of the dry heath or potential dry heath within the boundary of the cSAC and to monitor the condition of selected plots against a set of performance indicators. The monitoring result would establish the present condition of the feature.

Survey methodology consisted of a desk-study to identify potential search areas followed by site survey. The mapping was carried out primarily in October 2003 by R. Birch, with assistance for remote areas from K. Baukham; a small additional area was surveyed in January 2004. Homogeneous stands of heath were mapped in the field onto 1:10,000 scale ortho-rectified aerial photographs. Digital photographs of some stands were taken and these are included as target notes. Target notes were also taken of scattered bracken Pteridium aquilinum; scattered scrub; heavily disturbed areas and rare or notable species. A hand-held GPS was used to mark the locations of each target note. The condition of each stand was described using condition classes provided by CCW. The course followed in each plot was produced as an overlay in MapInfo (Mynydd Mallaen Dry Heath GPS_route). Each monitoring plot was then confirmed or reassessed as the category of heath mapped at original survey. The field mapping was completed between October 2003 and January 2004, and the data transferred to GIS. Monitoring plots against performance indicators included the following methodology; Eight monitoring plots across the site within selected vegetation stands were used to undertake sampling points whereby the vegetation was assessed within a 1metre radius against the criteria defining good quality dry heath.
