Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Northern Atlantic Wet Heath, European Dry Heath and Raised Bog Habitats within Cernydd Carmel candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC)
This dataset includes data collected from an assessment of the extent and condition of three Annex I habitats of the EC Habitats Directive at the Cernydd Carmel cSAC; namely North Atlantic Wet Heaths with Erica tetralix, European Dry Heaths (all subtypes) and Active Raised Bogs. Two principle objectives were defined: 1. To carry out an initial condition survey of the Annex I listed habitats using condition classes provided by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) staff 2. To monitor the condition of the Annex I listed habitats against performance indicator criteria provided by former CCW staff

Condition monitoring was undertaken within a number of permanent plots placed amongst the three Annex 1 habitat types. Plots were located in areas dominated by the target habitat (or its precursors) and fine-scale mosaics of different broad habitats were in general avoided. Twelve monitoring plots were established, within which 1 m radius sampling points were recorded. As far as possible, recording of samples was done on a regular grid pattern. All sample points within the plots were located by pacing either 10 m or 20 m intervals, following compass bearings appropriate to the orientation of the plot. At each 1 m radius sample point various performance indicator species/condition classes were recorded on pre-prepared recording sheets. Following the recording of sample points, a brief description of the vegetation of each monitoring plot was made.
