Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Monitoring Raised Mire Vegetation at Cors Caron candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) (2004)
This dataset was collected at Cors Caron candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC), in partial fulfilment of former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) Contract FC 73-05-35 \Monitoring of Raised Mire Vegetation at Cors Fochno and Cors Caron cSAC\". A second report outlines the results of monitoring work undertaken at Cors Fochno. The contract was commissioned to aid the assessment of the extent and condition of three Annex 1 habitats listed in the EC \"Habitats Directive\" (Council of the European Communities 1992): Degraded raised bogs still capable of natural regeneration; Transition mires and quaking bogs; Depressions on peat substrates of the Rhynchosporion;"

To monitor the Rhynchosporion habitat on the West Bog, a series of three carefully located 100m x 100m plots were established. A 10 metre sampling interval gave a total of 100 sampling points per plot. For the degraded raised bog, a total of five 20 m x 20 m plots, sampled at 5 metre intervals gave a total of 25 sample points per plot. The Transition mire was monitored by three 50 m x 50 m plots, sampled at 10 metre intervals, again equating to a total of 25 sample points per plot. The data collected were then analysed against tables of performance indicator criteria drawn-up by former CCW for the three Annex 1 habitat types. The work follows on from NVC mapping undertaken by Averis (2001).
