Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Freshwater Pearl Mussel on the Afon Eden cSAC (2003 and 2011)
Freshwater Pearl mussels are protected under national and international legislations. Afon Eden Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is the only site in Wales where pearl mussel forms the primary reason for selection of the Special Area of Conservation. The data forms part of ongoing monitoring of this site. The Afon Eden was surveyed to assess the current population status of Freshwater Pearl Mussel compared to that of a previous survey in 1997. The aim of this project was to undertake monitoring of the freshwater pearl mussel on the Afon Eden candidate (SAC) in order to be able to report on the condition as a requirement of the EC Habitats and Species Directive. There have been two monitoring cycles since the work in 1997, both in 2003 and 2011. The only data held for monitoring undertaken in 2003 are photographs taken of the site.

This project follows on from a baseline survey of the Afon Eden in 1997. Monitoring of the condition for each candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) feature follows the Common Standards approach outlined by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, as implemented by CCW. An initial assessment of the LIFE Protocol was carried out based on the results of the 1997 survey and a brief re-survey of selected sections of river. This assessment principally focused on establishing the mussel population density and distribution. These collected data were then used to determine whether the protocol was applicable to the Afon Eden. In 2003 eleven fixed monitoring transects were established within different sections of the river. Transects were repeat monitored in 2011. The protocol recommends that rivers with known mussel populations should be assessed by 50 m long, 1 m wide transects. The criteria includes a total mussel count, or estimate (if the number is >250); a detailed search of five 1m2 quadrats that includes invasive sampling for juveniles; measurement of 150 randomly chosen individuals; environmental features - substrate, algal cover, bankside vegetation, flow characteristics and other factors (e.g. evidence of pearl fishing, sheep dip etc).
