Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: 'European Dry Heath', 'Northern Atlantic Wet Heath with Erica tetralix' and 'Blanket Bog' at the Cadair Idris candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) (2004)
This dataset details the findings of a two part project to assess the condition of the European dry heath, wet heath and blanket bog habitats within the Cadair Idris candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) . The work was commissioned by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), and carried out by Central Environmental Surveys (CES) during November 2003. The purpose of this data capture was to map the dry heath, wet heath and blanket bog habitats, including condition classes of these, within the Cadair Idris cSAC to a uniform specification.

In the first phase of the project the targeted vegetation types were mapped according to a uniform set of criteria. Following the completion of the mapping phase, a second phase of the project involved laying a series of permanent plots for monitoring the condition of the vegetation within selected mapping units. The latter also involved taking baseline recordings of these plots. The type, location and size of these monitoring plots was determined during discussions with Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) staff prior to commencing the second, monitoring phase. During the mapping phase of the project the vegetation was assessed by dividing each of the three principal (Annex I) habitat categories into sub-categories which highlight the main impacts on vegetation condition, such as bracken invasion, dominance of negative indicators such as Juncus squarrosus, Molinia or Eriophorum vaginatum, or impacts of specific events such as heather burn. The survey region was mapped using these categories. The mapping phase of the survey was carried out over a three week period between the 11th and the 29th of November 2003 and was undertaken by experienced surveyors.

There were existing surveys of parts of the site, ranging from Phase I habitat surveys to a National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey of the National Nature Reserve (NNR) see metadata entry 'Upland vegetation survey of Cadair Idris NNR'. These employed various classifications, and a uniform survey was required to provide specific information designed to the meet the needs of habitat condition assessment and management.
