Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Petalwort Petalophyllum ralfsii at Y Twyni o Abermenai i Aberffraw cSAC (2004)
Petalwort Petalophyllum ralfsii is a pale green thalloid liverwort with erect lamellae on its upper surface, that grows in open, damp, calcareous dune slacks, often on low hummocks rather than on the very wet ground, on compacted sandy/muddy bryophyte-rich turf. The inclusion of the Petallophyllum ralfsii on Annex II of the EU Habitats and Species Directive requires NRW to identify Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for the species and to ensure that Favourable Conservation Status (FCS) applies. Whilst some background work has enabled the identification of key areas for Petallophyllum ralfsii on the candidate SAC, further information on its current extent, distribution and habitat associates are required. The purpose of this data capture was to map the distribution, density and habitat characteristics of Petalophyllum ralfsii at Twyni o Abermenai i Aberffraw cSAC. This will enable the targets within the conservation objective to be confirmed and to report on the condition of the Petalophyllum on the site.

The area to be covered by the survey is approximately 146 ha in extent distributed across two dune systems; Newborough Warren, 2319 ha and Aberffraw 368 ha (dune slacks to be visited are indicated on the attached maps). At each location where Petalophyllum is present: - The presence of Petalophyllum is to be marked on both a 1:10,000 map and the aerial photographs provided. - Where possible GPS locations with at least 15m precision should also be taken. - An estimate of abundance within each area of a slack that supports Petalophyllum should be made on the following scale: 1-5 per m2, 5-20 per m2 20-50 per m2 and >50 per m2. - The area over which the Petalophyllum is distributed should be given in m2. - Sketch maps and photographs should be produced showing the location of the Petalophyllum within the slack. - A 2x2m quadrat should be established in an area representative of the habitat in which Petalpohyllum is found and its location documented using photographs and the sketch map. The following data should be recorded within each quadrat:- 1. Vegetation height (cm). 2. % bare ground 3. Presence of an algal crust 4. Presence of standing water 5. The plant species within the quadrat and their DOMIN values 6. The number of Petalophyllum thalli
