Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Otter in the River Usk Catchment Area (2005)
The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) commissioned this work to assess the condition and conservation status of the European otter Lutra lutra, within the River Usk Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and catchment. The results of this project, combined with those of similar projects instigated by CCW on other SAC river catchments over the past two years, and in future years, will provide a valuable and unique picture of the otter in Wales.

A variety of methods were used to gather information about otter breeding activity on the catchment. These might broadly be described under the headings of questionnaires, interviews, record searches, and direct contacts with individuals thought likely to hold relevant information. In addition site inspections were carried out, as well as map searches and inspection of Phase 1 data and aerial photographs. Questionnaires were handed out to land owners, members of the public, who were visited on the tributaries during the survey phase of the project and anglers. All individuals, who returned questionnaires, were subsequently interviewed, mainly during personal visits, or as a minimum, by means of telephone discussion. In addition other interviews occurred as a result of site visits. For further data collation approaches were made to the Brecon Beacons National Park, Brecknock Wildlife Trust, Brecknock Otter Group, the Environment Agency, the Forestry Commission, Gwent Wildlife Trust, the Ministry of Defence, Monmouthshire County Council, Newport City Council and the Biodiversity Information Service for Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park. Otter breeding sites were identified on the basis of criteria developed by Liles in his report for the European Commission's Life Nature Programme to investigate the ecological requirements for breeding otters (Liles, 2003). In addition approaches were also made to several individuals, including the County Mammal Recorder for Monmouthshire. All of the records gathered were used as part of the process of identifying breeding sites and sites which might be used for breeding. Using the information gathered above, a list possible breeding sites was compiled, and throughout September and November 2004, and January 2005, most of these sites were visited and an inspection made of the habitat.
