Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: European Dry Heath, North Atlantic Wet Heath and Rhynchosporion Habitats in Preseli SAC (2005)
The collection of this dataset was commissioned by the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) to monitor the condition of the Northern Atlantic wet heath with Erica tetralix, European dry heath and Rhynchosporion habitats within the Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The original aim of the project was to monitor the condition of some of the Annex I habitats for which the site (Preseli SAC) has been designated against performance indicators provided by CCW. These habitats are Northern Atlantic wet heaths with Erica tetralix (H4010), European dry heaths (H4030) and Depressions on peat substrates of the Rhynchosporion (H7150). The monitoring follows on from a detailed habitat survey of the site undertaken jointly by CCW's Phase II survey team and under contract by earlier in 2005.

Monitoring was undertaken within a series of 25 sample plots the approximate locations of which were provided by CCW on the basis of the earlier habitat survey. At each sampling point the vegetation was assessed against criteria set out in Performance Indicator tables provided by CCW, which taken together provide a point based definition of desired habitat quality. During September 2004, a team of two surveyors visited the site and set up 5 plots to monitor the condition stands of 'Depressions on peat substrates of the Rhynchosporion'. The remaining plots: 7 sampling stands of 'European Dry Heath', 12 sampling typical wet heath and one sampling a site specific type of wet heath rich in Ulex gallii, were set up on a second visit in January 2005. On both occasions sampling points were located using GPS systems.
