Grey Seal Census for North Wales 2001
The grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, is relatively uncommon globally with estimates of 300,000 individuals across the north Atlantic in 2000. In the British Isles, the grey seal is more common that other species of seal breeding. This dataset contains the results of a full census of grey seal pup production in North Wales for the 2001 season. The aim of this project was to undertake an appropriate level of survey of grey seals in North Wales, from Aberystwyth to the Dee Estuary, in order to lead to a clearer understanding of the abundance and distribution of grey seals and pup production, and thereby to guide management. The objectives were to: - Locate and document all major sites where grey seal haul out for moulting and breeding, - Confirm the timing and extent of the breeding season - Locate and document all breeding sites in North Wales - Count the number of pups at each of these sites at regular intervals throughout that breeding season in 2001, in order to estimate pup production - Continue the daily pupping census of Bardsey Island - Take photographs of profiles to identify pelage markings of individuals for possible computer-aided matching in the future - Identify areas where seals are subject to disturbance by humans - Assess the quality of breeding haul-out environment - Advise on appropriate levels of monitoring / surveillance.

INFORMATION WARNING: The dataset within this dataset are wrong. The dates are incorrectly coded as 2010 instead of 2001. The coasts surveyed lie between Aberystwyth in the south to the Dee estuary in the east and includes the coast of Anglesey. In addition to this the coasts of all island adjacent to these coasts are also included. The coastline was split into six sections, The Penrhyn Llyn, Ynys Enlli, Ynys Mon West, Ynys Mon East, Great Orme and Little Orme, The Dee Esturary. On foot surveys were conducted. Wave ski surveys were conducted to reach offshore environments in a more or less silent way, thereby minimising the prospect of causing disturbance to the seals. Sites which were even further offshore or in particularly exposed areas where tidal races occurred, were accessed via boat.
