There are 18 permanently marked fine-grain vegetation monitoring plots located at Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon, two in each of nine selected National Vegetation Classification communities found at the site. Plots are 10m x 10m in size and contain 10 randomly selected 40cm x 40cm cells. For each cell, the presence of all higher plants, bryophytes and lichens (except for those growing on wood or rock) was recorded. In addition, the presence of bare soil, rock, open water, leaf litter, dead wood and animal dung was also recorded. Leaf litter was defined as the presence of dead plant material in a thatch layer of variable thickness and extent, often from more than one season. For each plot slope, aspect, slope form and land use were recorded. For each cell a number of environmental variables were recorded. These include the presence of features such as animal tracks, walls, ditches, banks, streams and hedges.
