Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Otter in the River Wye SAC and catchment area (2006)
Special Area of Conservation (SAC) monitoring provides an assessment of the current and potential distribution and breeding success of the otter within the Wye SAC and to identify features outside the SAC boundary whose condition may influence the viability of the otter meta-population associated with the River Wye. Results from the most recent Otter Survey of Wales (Jones, 2004) show that otter signs were found within the Welsh part of the Wye catchment at 92% of sites searched. Whilst these signs are a useful indicator of otter distribution, they shed little light on otter breeding. The ability to monitor breeding activity and breeding sites in the catchment is crucial if the species and its habitats are to be maintained in a Favourable Conservation Status. The purpose of this data capture was to assess the current and potential breeding success of the otter within the Wye catchment.

The methodology for this study is based on work carried out for the European Commission's Life Nature Programme, to investigate the ecological requirements for otter breeding (Liles, 2003). Information on otter breeding activity is derived from a number of sources including: otter road deaths; reports of otter cub sightings; and records of orphan otter cubs. Possible and potential breeding sites were identified from Phase 1 maps, and by walk-over surveys of all possible sites to confirm breeding site potential. A similar method was used to locate potential amphibian feeding sites for otters. In order to make data management and analyses easier, the river system was divided into three sub-catchments; Lower Wye (Chepstow to Monmouth); Middle Wye (Rhydspence to Builth Wells); and Upper Wye (Builth Wells to its source).
