Merthyr Mawr Topographic Surveys Conducted as part of the Sand Dune Rejuvenation Trials (2012 - 2015).
The purpose of this data capture was to assess the topographic mobility of the Merthyr Mawr National Nature Reserve sand dunes and to monitor the sand dune rejuvenation. Merthyr Mawr Warren sand dune rejuvenation trails began in December 2012. The dataset consists of points were topographic elevations were determined, many of which were on profile lines which were profile lines. Key features were defined based on the limits. These features included ridge crests, standing water, new vegetation growth and the position of the frontal sand dunes.

The report associated with this data provides a brief summary of the results arising from the second in a planned series of topographic monitoring surveys at Merthyr Mawr Warren where dune rejuvenation trials were begun in December 2012. Elevation points were determined using Leica RTK GPS SmartRover equipment. During each survey ground photographs were taken from a number of fixed points to provide a visual record of changes in the vegetation cover and surface character. The raw survey data were mathematically ‘corrected’ to allow direct comparison of straight line profiles derived from the October 2009 LiDAR survey and the May 2013 ground survey. The vertical accuracy of the LiDAR has not been quantified directly but is estimated to be better than 10-15 cm.
