Ad hoc North Wales Moth Records 2013 to 2014
This is a third party dataset held by Natural Resources Wales. This dataset was collected as part of a sabbatical taken by Ian Sims. It consists of moth records and sightings obtained between 2013 and 2014 in North Wales. In all over 3113 records of over 11535 moths of 408 species were recorded, including 11 Nationally Notable species, Sandhill Rustic (Luperina nickerlii gueneei), (Na/RDB), Ashworth’s Rustic (Xestia ashworthii) (Na), Sand Dart (Agrotis ripae) (Nb), Anerastia lotella (Nb), Blomer’s Rivulet (Discoloxia blomeri) (Nb), Scarce Water-veneer (Donacaula mucronellus) (Nb), Homoeosoma nebulella (Nb), Marsh Oblique-striped (Hypenodes humidalis) (Nb), Shore Wainscot (Mythimna litoralis) (Nb), Pediasia aridella (Nb) and Pseudopostega crepusculella (Nb). Of the remaining species 69 were classified as 'Local', 327 as 'common' with one 'Immigrant'. 42 BAP species were identified, along with 7 Endangered and 32 Vulnerable species. At least an additional four species were identified to family level only. This data is now part of Natural Resources Wales' Welsh Invertebrate Dataset. This datasets is already available on the NBN Gateway and therefore is not required to be published by Natural Resources Wales.

Surveys were undertaken almost entirely by light-trapping of adult moths at night, with traps emptied and species identified from the early morning. Individuals which could not be identified quickly in the field were potted up and kept for later identification. No live moths were removed from sites. All identification was visual; no dissection was used at all, although on one or two occasions moths which were found dead were kept as voucher specimens. Photos of some of the more unusual or difficult species were taken and sent to John Harold (Anglesey County Recorder) and/or Andrew Graham (Gwynedd County Recorder) for identification / confirmation. Twelve nights’ light-trapping were undertaken between 5th July and 6th September 2013 and 13th June and 6th September 2014 at five sites in Gwynedd and Anglesey: RSPB Tan yr Allt, RSPB Ystumllyn, RSPB Malltraeth Marsh, Newborough Warren NNR, and Coed Dolgarrog National Nature Reserve. A total of thirteen different traps were used: three 125w Mercury Vapour ‘Robinson’ traps, a 125w Mercury Vapour ‘Skinner’, and nine actinic traps: five 15w, a 25w and three 6w, all (except one 15w ‘Skinner’ type) using the heath-trap design, home-made or otherwise. An additional 53 nights’ trapping were also undertaken on RSPB reserves (Malltraeth Marsh, Valley Wetlands and South Stack) outside of sabbatical time, and these records are included in this report. Records from other non-designated sites (146 nights’ trapping) have been sent to county recorders but are not included here.
