There is no digital data for Highest Astronomical Tides (HAT), which is the landward boundary for a great length, we have adopted a 1.5 m buffer above Mean High Water Mark (MHWM). The Latitude and Longitude positions plotted to WGS84 projection and then the positions converted to British National Grid. Where the description quotes following MLWOT the boundary has been captured to Mean Low Water Mark (MLWM) as shown on OS MasterMap. Therefore for the definitive boundary please refer to the description in the Byelaws. With the coming of GIS and its use in government departments and commercial companies mobilising the data in this way, advances the protection of these sites and the efficiency of decision making.
