Great Crested Newt Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring Data
This dataset comprises of Natural Resources Wales (NRWs) monitoring data for Great Crested Newts on Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in Wales, where Great Crested Newts are a special feature. It also includes records of other amphibians. This dataset forms part of the Wales-wide Common Standards Monitoring. Currently the monitoring covers three sites in North East Wales: - Johnstown Newt Sites SAC - Deeside and Buckley Newt Sites SAC - Halkyn Mountain/Mynydd Helygain SAC The aim of this data capture was to assess the condition of designated SAC features based on site-specific performance indicators, and to record aspects of their management, both as an aid to management decisions and for reporting at a variety of scales. The reports also include collations of historical records however, these are not included here as they are not owned by NRW and are therefore omitted from this published dataset.

Slightly different methodologies were used depending on the site. At Johnstown, and Deeside and Buckley Special Areas of Conservation sites were monitored for the presence of Great Crested Newts eggs, larvae and adults. During the initial monitoring in 2003 all ponds were visited once, during June, where visual inspections took place for Great Crested Newts eggs, lying on substrates near the shoreline. Other bird and fish species were also noted. The main assessment in 2003 consisted of site visits to all ponds at least once between August and September to record presence of larvae and eggs using visual observation, bottle trapping, torch surveying and netting. Environmental conditions within the ponds and other birds and fish species were also recorded. At Halkyn Mountain Special Area of Conservation condition assessments were undertaken where 45 ponds were surveyed where Great Crested Newts had previously been recorded, for eggs, larvae, juveniles and other environmental data.
