Marine data from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Technical Support (Research and Monitoring) Contracts in Wales
This dataset is comprised of a collection of marine species sightings collated since 1993 from marine surveys, technical support contracts and research, and monitoring contracts. This dataset is currently maintained and managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). The surveys focus on benthic habitats (often referred to as 'biotopes') in intertidal, inshore (typically within 3 nm) and subtidal areas. Original copies of all the surveys are now held in NRW's Marine Recorder database. The purpose of this data capture was to aid coastal zone and sea-use management and to contribute to the identification of areas of important marine natural heritage sites. This dataset comprises of a number of surveys entered into Marine Recorder which have been packaged for dissemination onto the NBN Gateway.
Only a redacted version of this data is published and available under the Open Governance Licence and available for public use, see Limitation on Public Access and Use Constraints

This dataset covers the whole of Wales. The individual contract surveys, that this dataset is made up of, were collected according to different methodologies. These include methods described in the Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) and Countryside Council for Wales' (CCW) marine monitoring techniques described in CCW Contract Science Report No: 380.

Part of this dataset is sensitive, and access may be restricted under relevant legislation. The sensitive data is as follows: -Native Oyster Ostrea edulis (below 10km square). -Crayfish Palinurus elephas (below 10km square). -Seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus (below 10km square). -Short snouted seahorse Hippocampus hippocampus (below 10km square). -Oyster bed habitat IMX.Ost (biotope code) (below 20km square). NRW may NOT publish or disseminate the sensitive data. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. However, there are no access restrictions on non-sensitive data. NRW may release, publish or disseminate a redacted version of the data freely.
