River Dee and Bala lake Special Area of Conservation (SAC) population attribute condition assessment for brook, river and sea lamprey (2014)
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is responsible for monitoring the condition of lamprey populations within Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and to ensure the maintenance of favourable conservation status within these designated sites. This is in line with Habitats Directive monitoring and reporting on a 5 yearly cycle. The River Dee and Bala lake is designated under the Habitats Directive as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for several feature including brook, river and sea lamprey (Lampetra planeri, L. fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus) The populations of all three species are threatened in Europe mainly due to obstructions to migration and issues surrounding water quality. The River Dee and Bala lake SAC holds a significant population of these three lamprey species for Wales and Great Britain. The aim of this data collection was to contribute towards the assessment of the condition of the shad population in the River Dee & Bala lake SAC as part of the Habitats Directive Report Cycles. This dataset contains data from the following reporting cycles: Cycle 1: 1999 – 2005, Cycle 2: 2006 – 2012, Cycle 3: 2013 – 2018 (data collection is on-going).

Between 1999 and 2013 external contractors undertook electric fishing surveys in autumn, usually once in the six year reporting cycle at 30 – 40 sample sites in the catchment. 2013 onwards: NRW has the in-house skills to undertake the electric fishing surveys and so a smaller autumnal annual sampling programme was set up. Specific details for survey methods are detailed as follows. Lamprey monitoring protocol: 1. At each site electrofishing should be undertaken over an area judged to be both optimal and sub-optimal lamprey habitat. 2. Optimal and sub-optimal habitats for ammocoetes should be sampled with 1m2 quadrats in a 100 m stretch of river at each survey site. 3. A minimum of three quadrat data points is required if possible within each survey site. The number of sampling points should be recorded on the field survey sheet. 4. All lampreys captured should be counted, measured to the nearest mm and identified as far as possible in the relevant section of the field sheet to species level in the field using the key of Gardiner (2003). The identification of lamprey ammocoetes and transformers should be as follows: a. Lampetra (river/brook lamprey) ammocoetes b .Petromyzon (sea lamprey) ammocoetes c. River lamprey transformers d. Petromyzon (sea lamprey) transformers
