River habitat condition assessment using 2013 and 2014 River Habitat Survey (RHS) data and Common Standards Monitoring guidance for River Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
This dataset contains the results of a condition assessment of the River Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC) physical river habitat quality using River Habitat Survey (RHS) and LEAFPAC (river macrophyte) survey data 2012 to 2016. Former Environment Agency RHS database contains welsh data which is now held and managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). NRW is responsible for monitoring the condition of the river habitat quality on SAC rivers designated for the Ranunculion feature; more formally known as "Water courses of plain to montane levels with the Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation” (EU habitat code 3260). The RHS & LEAFPAC surveys are conducted as part of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) water body classifications. In addition NRW is required under the Habitats Directive to evaluate the conservation status of this river habitat. Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance recommends that some of this data can be used to assess the following physical habitat attributes: Habitat Modification Score; Riparian zone vegetation naturalness; Large woody debris; Fine sediment; Negative indicators: alien / locally absent species. The Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance sets out eight river habitat quality assessment attributes for the condition of this SAC feature. Specific details for RHS survey methods are detailed in The River Habitat Survey manual produced by the Environment Agency in 2003. Details for the LEAFPAC macrophyte survey method are found in Surveying freshwater macrophytes in rivers Operational instruction 131-07 produced by the Environment Agency in 2008.
