River Usk Special Area of Conservation (SAC) habitat structure condition assessment 2013 - 2015
This dataset consists of the condition assessment of the River Usk Special Area of Conservation (SAC) physical river habitat quality assessed using River Habitat Survey (RHS) and LEAFPAC (river macrophyte) survey data between 2012 and 2016. NRW is responsible for monitoring the condition of the river habitat quality on SAC rivers designated for the Ranunculion feature; more formally known as “Water courses of plain to montane levels with the Ranunculion fluitantis and Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation” (EU habitat code 3260). Habitats Directive and NRW is required to evaluate the conservation status of this river habitat. The Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance (JNCC, 2014) sets out eight river habitat quality assessment attributes for the condition of this SAC feature. Specific details for RHS survey methods are detailed in Environment Agency. 2003. The River Habitat Survey manual. Details for the LEAFPAC macrophyte survey method are found in Environment Agency. 2008. Surveying freshwater macrophytes in rivers. Operational instruction 131-07.

The River Habitat Survey (extracted from Biosys) and LEAFPAC surveys are conducted as part of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) water bodies classification. Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance recommends that some of this data can be used to assess the following physical habitat attributes: - Habitat Modification Score - Riparian zone vegetation naturalness - Large woody debris - Fine sediment - Negative indicators: alien / locally absent species
