Invertebrates Recorded on Exposed Riverine Sediments at Llanelltyd on the Afon Mawddach in 2016

To help address flooding issues on the Afon Mawddach at Llanelltyd, Natural Resources Wales considered the removal of gravel from shingle bars immediately upstream and downstream of Llanelltyd Bridge. This survey was undertaken to assess the importance of these exposed riverine sediment (ERS) habitats for specialist invertebrate communities and to evaluate the potential impacts of gravel removal. Invertebrate surveys were conducted during July and September 2016 and results were compared with a previous survey undertaken on the Tan-lan shingle bar in 2003. Exposed Riverine Sediment Quality Indices were calculated where possible. Although flooding during August and September may have affected survey results and reduced species diversity, the findings indicate that the Llanelltyd shingle bars continue to support an important exposed riverine sediment invertebrate assemblage.
