Bullhead (Cottus gobio) population condition assessment for River Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Habitats Directive reporting cycle 3 2013 – 2018.
Bullhead (Cottus gobio) is a designated feature of the River Wye Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Assessments of bullhead distribution, population demographic and density in this river is of particular interest as an indication of condition assessment. The data was collected to help assess the conservation status of bullhead in the River Wye catchments. This collation of bullhead data is made up of by-catch records collected by Natural Resources Wales during salmonids, eel and coarse fish surveys. In addition a small number of by-catch records are also made during river macroinvertebrate and shad egg kick sampling surveys. The collation includes information about species distribution, size and abundance for bullhead which are a designated (Annex II) features within SAC rivers in Wales. The first 50 fish are measured and the remainder of the catch at a survey point are only counted.

Bullhead by-catch records were collected during juvenile salmonids, eel & coarse fish surveys conducted using electrofishing techniques. This data was previously held by Environment Agency (EA) in their National Fish Population Database (NFPD), but the Welsh data has now been transferred into Natural Resources Wales (NRW’s) WISKI / KiECO database. Shad egg data collection was done using standard kick sampling techniques. These are currently held in paper record format and spreadsheets.
