Three adults were recorded, and recommendations were made to improve habitat quality for the species through the reintroduction of grazing and the reduction of bramble cover to create more open woodland conditions. Survey work undertaken in February 2016 focused on locating additional populations of the beetle in woodlands close to Coed Maesmelin. A total of eight sites were surveyed during this second phase of work, but no further populations were discovered. However, areas within the upper Mellte and Nedd valleys, together with Craig Gwladys Country Park, appeared to provide highly suitable habitat for the species. Coed Maesmelin was also revisited, where a single adult Carabus intricatus was recorded on 4 February 2016. Bramble growth appeared even more extensive than during the previous survey, and, given the absence of records from elsewhere in the Neath area, the implementation of habitat management measures to improve site conditions is considered a matter of urgency.
