Following successful captive-breeding trials and the insights gained from them, a programme of field-based experimental work was initiated to improve understanding of the species' ecology and inform future conservation management. The project aimed to investigate habitat preferences, responses to fluctuating water levels, movement patterns within the lake, and the potential value of artificial refuges for supporting populations.
