A Survey for the Sandhill Rustic Luperina nickerlii gueneei on Newborough Warren National Nature Reserve (2016)
A total of 149 adult Sandhill Rustic Luperina nickerlii gueneei were recorded on Newborough Warren between 29 August and 2 September 2016. Of these, 121 individuals were recorded in saltmarsh and dune-edge habitats at Penllyn Pysgod and Braich Abermenai, while a further 28 adults were recorded on the Cefni Dunes and adjacent saltmarsh. The numbers recorded indicate that robust populations persist at both locations.
These populations appear to have survived the severe winter storms of 2013-14, which eroded extensive areas of foredune habitat on Newborough Warren, and may have benefited from the subsequent development of Sand Couch-dominated habitat. The total recorded contrasts markedly with the previous survey in 2010, during which only twelve adults were observed.
In contrast, seaward-facing populations formerly present in front of Newborough Forest at Ro Bach and Traeth Llanddwyn, and at Gwddw Llanddwyn on Ynys Llanddwyn, where the species was recorded in small numbers in 2010, appear to have been lost.
It is recommended that suitable breeding habitat is mapped as it develops in order to determine its extent and distribution. Regular monitoring of the Sandhill Rustic population should also be undertaken, with survey frequency informed by the occurrence of major winter storm events that may significantly alter dune habitats.
