Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Shad Egg Survey on the River Wye (2017)

The River Wye rises on Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains and flows in a generally south-easterly direction to enter the Severn Estuary at Chepstow. The river is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the Habitats Directive for several features, including salmon, lampreys and shads: Twaite (Alosa fallax) and Allis (Alosa alosa) shad. In Britain, significant populations of Twaite shad are known to spawn in the Rivers Severn, Wye, Usk and Tywi. The population of both species are threatened in Europe mainly due to obstructions to migration and water quality issues. The purpose of this data capture was to make an assessment of Conservation Status by conducting egg deposition surveys to assess spawning extent and compare these with results from previous datasets. Surveys carried out along the length of the Welsh portion of the River Wye from Builth Wells to Monmouth. The survey was conducted in May and June of 2013, 2015 & 2016.

Data is collected according to Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) published guidance on Common Standards Monitoring for Freshwater Fauna (JNCC, 2015). The distribution of spawning shad within each river catchments are assessed using a kick sampling technique for eggs conducted in the spring.
