Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Shad Egg Survey on the River Usk (2013 - 2018)
This report assesses the spawning extent population attribute of Allis and Twaite shad on the River Usk Special Area of Conservation (SAC), using a kick sampling monitoring method for shad eggs at routine sampling points using an Natural Resources Wales (NRW) standard protocol (Garrett, 2015) during the months of May - June in 2013, 2015 and 2016. This is one of the population attributes for condition assessment from the Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) guidance for freshwater features (Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), 2015). The two remaining population attributes are never assessed by NRW because of the invasive techniques for sampling juvenile and adult life stages of these two species. The environmental attribute targets for water quality, flow, river habitat etc will be assessed when sufficient data has been collated and is available. Overall the shad spawning distribution target was not met on the River Usk SAC in the third reporting cycle. This preliminary assessment is classed as a Fail. For freshwater species and habitats the overall assessment of the feature as 'Favourable' or 'Unfavourable' (JNCC, 2017) incorporates both abiotic and biotic attributes. This overall assessment will be made when in addition to the population attributes, the environmental attributes (water quality, flow, river habitat, barriers to migration etc.) for the SAC river have also been assessed. This analysis will be documented in a summary table for each SAC river and each of its features.
