Despite the significance of the SAC, relatively little information was previously available on its saproxylic invertebrate assemblages, although the area is known to support a number of nationally rare and threatened species, including the lime bark beetle (Ernoporus tiliae) and Cosnard's net-winged beetle (Erotides cosnardi). The survey forms the first phase of a wider programme of work aimed at producing a comprehensive inventory of saproxylic invertebrates across the SAC. Survey results demonstrated the considerable importance of the Wye Valley Woodlands for saproxylic invertebrates, recording 39 species, including seven Nationally Scarce species. The findings improve understanding of species distribution and habitat requirements and will help inform future woodland management and conservation within the SAC.
