Once regularly recorded in the montane areas of Scotland and the Lake District, recent records of the IUCN Endangered ground beetle Leistus montanus, a species associated with high altitude scree, are confined to the Langdale Pikes in 2008 and Skiddaw in 2016, both in Cumbria. In Wales, it was historically recorded on Cadair Idris in 1829 and 1968, from Y Lliwedd on Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in 1965 and 1968, and from Carnedd y Ddelw on the Carneddau in 1971. The only recent record was thought to be from Eglwyseg Rocks in 2007. A single adult of Leistus spinibarbis was recorded on Eglwyseg Rocks, prompting an examination of the voucher specimen from 2007 which also proved to be L. spinibarbis. No beetles were found at Carnedd y Ddelw where the habitat appears unsuitable, with little or no scree, suggesting that the 1971 record may also be erroneous. L. montanus therefore appears to be restricted in Wales to Cadair Idris and Y Lliwedd, both of which support extensive scree beds, although surveys of other sites with suitable habitat would be needed to confirm this.
