Assessing Sensitivity of Welsh Marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) Features to Unregulated and Partially Regulated Activities
This dataset is associated with the outputs from 'Assessing Sensitivity of Welsh Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Areas (SPA) Features to Unregulated and Partially Regulated Activities' contract which is a pilot project part of a wider programme of work. The data outputs are a series of spreadsheets which accompany a report and are split to mirror the outputs of 3 Work Packages. The data which constitutes these spreadsheets is composed of work by consultants ABPmer alongside existing data obtained from a Natural England led contract and the Marine Biological Association. WP1_Activity_Pressure matrix_070318: Contains definitions of activities used in the study, whether there is evidence to support a link between each activity and pressure, whether the pressures associated with an activity and a level that needs to be considered further, a review of the current pressure benchmarks and an assessment of the activity-pressure against the benchmarks to determine the likelihood of an activity exceeding the benchmark pressure. WP2_Benthic_Activity_Pressure_Feature_070318: Contains the pressure-feature relationship for each activity (for biotopes) and the accompanying sensitivity scores. WP2_Benthic_Sensitivity_Summary_070318: Gives the maximum sensitivity of the activity - feature (biotope) combination. WP2_Mobile_Activity_Pressure_Feature_070318: Contains the pressure-feature relationship for each activity (for mobile species) and the accompanying sensitivity scores. WP2_Mobile_Sensitivity_Summary_070318: Gives the maximum sensitivity of the activity - feature (mobile species) combination. WP3_All_Sites_Features_Max_Sensitivity_070318: Contains the sensitivity scores for each activity vs annex 1 habitat / mobile species (within each relevant Welsh SAC /SPA)

The approach to defining feature sensitivity to unregulated or partially regulated activities was divided into a number of key tasks: - Definition of activities: A total of 41 unregulated or partially regulated activities have been considered within this project. - Establishing the evidence base for activity – pressure relationship: A fixed list of pressures has been derived within OSPAR to ensure consistency in the way pressures are assessed and their impact on biodiversity evaluated. A list of 39 pressures were considered as part of this project. - Assessing the suitability of the pressure benchmarks which underpin existing feature-pressure sensitivity assessments: The aim of this task was to assess whether the activities included in this study were likely to result in a particular pressure at the specified benchmark. - Assessing sensitivities of SAC and SPA features to the pressures arising from each activity; The next stage in the process involved determining which marine habitat and mobile features are considered sensitive to pressures that may occur at a level of concern from each activity. - Populating sensitivity matrices from Welsh Marine Protected Areas based on component designated features: The sensitivity information complied for each activity was the applied to the features within each of the Welsh Marine Protected Areas.

This contract was run by Natural Resources Wales and carried out by ABPmer (appointed consultants). This contract is the first stage in a programme of work to assess and where necessary manage ‘unregulated’ or ‘partially unregulated’ activities where they impact on the condition of Welsh MPAs. This contract focusses on determining the sensitivities of features of SACs and SPAs to certain activities determined as ‘Unregulated’ or ‘Partially regulated’.
