UK Coastal Flood Forecasting (UKCFF) Tide Gauge Network
The UK Coastal Flood Forecasting (UKCFF) is a partnership formed by the Environment Agency (EA), Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Department for Agriculture and Rivers Agency Northern Ireland (RAN) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Through the partnership the authorities commission and deliver the capability to monitoring and forecasting of coastal conditions that underpin coastal flood forecasting and flood risk modelling throughout the UK. The network includes 43 gauges most of which are related through the national levelling network to Ordnance Datum Newlyn. The whole network is owned by the Environment Agency who operates the network on behalf of the UKCFF partners. Data are collected, processed and archived centrally to provide long time series of reliable and accurate sea levels. The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) act as Data Archive Centre for this data.

Data from the UKCFF goes into WISKI7 Hydro and Telemetry. Although NRW receives data from several sites within the network, only one site goes into our central data store. This data relates to Mumbles Head only. Data is made available in near real-time with measurements reported every 15 minutes. The measurements provide mean sea level within each 15-minute window and are reported relative to local datum (m) and relative to Ordnance Datum at Newlyn (mAOD). BODC has special responsibility for the remote monitoring and retrieval of sea level data from the network. Daily checks are kept on the performance of the gauges and the data are downloaded weekly. These areas then routinely processed, and quality controlled prior to being made available for scientific use. The data can also be accessed through the BODC website or through an Environment Agency API. Note that for convenience the website displays times in local time (i.e. BST during the summer) whereas the underlying data from the API is given in GMT.
