Monitoring Wetland Invertebrates on Rhos Goch National Nature Reserve, Radnorshire (2018)
This report presents the findings of wetland invertebrate monitoring undertaken at Rhos Goch National Nature Reserve, Radnorshire, in 2017. Previous surveys identified four key wetland habitat features supporting the reserve's invertebrate assemblages: bare mud, ground-layer vegetation, open water and wetland flora. In 2007, six monitoring stations were established and surveyed using standardised timed-search techniques and a range of collecting methods to provide a framework for long-term monitoring. A suite of target wetland invertebrate species was identified for each habitat feature, with favourable condition defined as the presence of at least 50% of the target taxa during monitoring.
The 2017 survey forms part of a monitoring programme that began in 2007 and was repeated in 2012. A total of 438 records representing 226 invertebrate species were collected during the 2017 survey. Of the 115 target species previously recorded from the reserve, only 26 species (23%) were recorded in 2017. This continues a marked downward trend observed over the ten-year monitoring period, with 68 target species (59%) recorded in 2007 and 37 species (32%) recorded in 2012.
The results indicate that all four key wetland habitat features are in unfavourable condition and that the proportion of characteristic wetland invertebrate species continues to decline. The findings suggest a reduction in habitat suitability for a range of specialist wetland taxa across the reserve.
To reverse these declines, grazing levels should be increased to create and maintain areas of bare mud and open water, while ongoing scrub management should continue to limit succession and prevent the loss of open wetland habitats. These measures are considered essential to restoring and maintaining favourable conditions for the reserve's wetland invertebrate assemblages.
