WINS Natural Flood Management: Agricultural Management Opportunities
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Based Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: The map shows areas where agricultural management measures could contribute positively to natural flood management. Measures considered are the planting or widening of existing hedgerows (all existing hedgerows are displayed in this map), as well as retention of winter stubbles. Hard engineering solutions are not considered in the map set for natural flood management.

How the map has been created: The outer boundary of any parcel of land managed agriculturally has been considered as an opportunity for working with hedgerows, either the widening of existing ones or the planting of new ones, on condition that the land is judged to be biophysically able to support the growth of hedges and if the slope of the land is less than 11 degrees. The slope threshold acknowledges that at particularly steep slopes, an individual hedgerow will not have a noticeable effect on the speed and quantity of overland flow, and hence not deliver natural flood management benefits. If the area is known to be characterised by stone walls, this has been acknowledged as a sensitivity to hedgerow planting. Any area with arable land has been considered as an opportunity area for the retention of winter stubbles, if the area has a slope over 7 degrees; this is an approximate slope threshold for when the land will start to contribute noticeably to overland flow due to infiltration occurring too slowly. Any opportunities falling within 500m of rivers where considered to be priority opportunities. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: IACS data could be used to identify agricultural land more reliably and prioritise opportunities around grazing land managed with high stocking densities (addressing higher soil compaction and less infiltration) National Phase 1
