WINS Natural Flood Management: Catchment Zones
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: The map shows the area split into seven separate catchment zones, in which different types of NFM intervention can be used to achieve benefits. The catchment zones are: floodplains in valley bottom areas; floodplains in the mid-reaches; gentle and steeply sloping mid-reaches; floodplains in the headwaters regions, as well as gently and steeply sloping headwater regions.

How the map has been created: For this map, the valley bottom floodplains have been defined as falling within floodzone 3 and having an elevation of less than 100m. The headwaters region has been defined as having an elevation of over 300m; the region is considered to be headwaters floodplain if the area also falls in floodzone 3; steep headwaters, if the slope is over 11°; and as gentle headwaters, if it is less than 11°. The area that is neither valley bottom nor head waters region forms the mid-reaches, with areas falling into floodzone 3 forming the mid-reaches floodplains and slope of 11° again forming the threshold between gentle and steep mid-reaches. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: This dataset shows a rough approximation of catchment zones to help target NFM measures; through more detailed hydrological modelling, more detailed catchment zones could be derived.
