WINS Natural Flood Management: Constraints for Enhancing Surface Roughness
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Based Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: The maps shows the number of constraints to enhancing surface roughness for NFM.

How the map has been created: The following types of constraints were considered for enhancing surface roughness: Habitat constrain: Existing land cover that is suitable for conversion to another habitat type (high biodiversity-value habitats) or enhanced through restoration of degraded habitat. Coast proximity: Areas within 500m of the coast where considered too close to the coast for the area to have the potential to deliver NFM benefits. Existing urban areas (roads and buildings) are unsuitable for conversion to a habitat type with high surface roughness. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 data is likely out of date in many places. Only limited inferences of habitat are possible by assessing Phase 1 habitat codes. Surface roughness could be derived from more direct measures than habitat scoring Instead of using a coastal buffer, ideally all areas would be masked out that do not have any urban features dowqnslope of them.
