WINS Natural Flood Management: Opportunities for Catchment Woodland Planting
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Based Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: This map shows the opportunity space for planting catchment woodland for NFM benefits. It is important to note that most effective use of these opportunity spaces would be to plant deep-rooting species, particularly broadleaved species, in order to fully realise the NFM potential.

How the map has been created: For all maps, the suitability for woodland planting has been established using ALC data split into different attributes, as well as the current land cover. At this stage all areas were identified where it is biophysically possible to plant trees. The location of artificially drained land was modelled to identify areas where NFM measures, if implemented, could take a longer time period to reap benefits as compared to establishing woodland on land that does not have extensive under-drainage. Within the remaining opportunity space, sensitivities were identified. These are areas within which woodland planting is possible, but special considerations apply, such as for example the species composition in an acid sensitive catchment, and potential presence of high-biodiversity value Ffridd habitat. Additionally, constraints were applied to the opportunity space; at this stage areas that are not suitable for planting trees are removed from the opportunity space. Several categories of constraint were considered, including biophysical, legislative and conservation constraints. Areas within which the planting of woodland is unlikely to deliver NFM benefits, e.g. areas within 500m of the coast, and areas on soil types that are not slowly permeable, are also excluded at this stage. The combined constraints for catchment woodland planting are shown in a separate map. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. Data on land drainage have been modelled, and is likely to over-estimate and under-estimate land drainage in different locations. Use of 500m coastal buffer to prevent coastal areas being mapped as opportunity space is a rough approximation of a complex problem. Some locations within this 500m buffer may in fact be suitable for woodland planting for mediating downslope flood risk. The extent of potential Fridd habitat has been modelled using the Phase 1 habitat data. It is likely to over-estimate and under-estimate the Ffridd cover in different locations.
