Opportunities for new riparian woodland were identified within 50 m of rivers and 30 m of drainage channels. Within this opportunity area, sensitivities were identified and constraints applied. Constraints to riparian woodland planting are presented in a separate dataset and include areas within 500 m of the coastline, Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and climate change-resilient peatlands. Opportunities for riparian woodland planting are generally subject to fewer constraints than those for floodplain or wider catchment woodland planting. This reflects the smaller scale of riparian planting, which can often be undertaken without significantly altering the existing land use or character of an area. For example, riparian woodland may be established on agricultural land and, in some cases, within designated sites where planting is compatible with site conservation objectives and sufficient space is available.
