WINS Natural Flood Management: Opportunities for Floodplain Woodland Planting
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Based Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. There is an accompanying User Guide to assist in the use of these datasets. A full list of datasets used and data limitations can be found in the project technical report. What the map shows: This map shows the opportunity space for planting floodplain woodland to deliver NFM benefits. It is important to note that most effective use of these opportunity spaces would be to plant deep-rooting species, particularly broadleaved species, in order to fully realise NFM potential.

How the map has been created: The suitability for woodland planting has been established using ALC data split into different attributes (soil depth, climate, stoniness, slope, drought and wetness), as well as the current land cover; these datasets were used to identify where it is biophysically possible to plant trees. Only areas falling within floodzone 3 (proxy for floodplains) were considered. Areas likely to flood more frequently, i.e. those falling within floodzone 2, were considered as priority opportunities. Areas where it is not possible or desirable to plant floodplain woodland were identified (the constraints) and removed from the opportunity space. This included best and most versatile land (highest agricultural grades), designated sites, existing urban areas, and climate change-resilient peat. The floodplain woodland constraints are shown on a separate map. Within the remaining opportunity space, areas with sensitivities to woodland planting were identified. Sensitivities included grade 3a agricultural land (moderate agricultural grade), existing peat resource that is not expected to be resilient to climate change, acid sensitive catchments, scheduled ancient monuments, and common land. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. Taking the first 500m from the coastline out of the opportunity space is a rough approximation of a complex problem. Ideally, all areas would be taken out that do not have areas at risk of flooding downslope from them or are too close to the area at risk of flooding to have a noticeable effect on the extent of river swelling.
